Oly: Olympic closing ceremony under way

ATHENS, Aug 29 AAP - The Olympic Games closing ceremony is under way with a colourful
celebration of Greek song and dance.

The two hour extravaganza began with a festival of music, constructed around five key
scenes including a traditional wedding.

Thousands of stalks have been "planted" in the centre of the Olympic Stadium, forming
a spiral wheat field from which five of Greece's most popular singers emerged.

Haris Alexiou, Dimitra Galani, Marinella, George Dalaras and Yiannis Parios waved white
scarves, prompting the 72,000 people in the stands to wave their own scarves.

The singers invited the audience to drink, relax and join in a feast of Greek culture.

Winners of the men's marathon will soon be presented with their medals before the athletes
of 201 nations march into the stadium.

Swimmer Petria Thomas, who won three gold medals and one silver in Athens at her third
and final Olympics, will carry the Australian flag.

The closing ceremony caps off 16 days of sporting competition.
