Fed: Woodley says reform will save party

A former Democrats senator says the party won't survive its latest troubles unlessit puts reforms in place.

JOHN WOODLEY, who quit the party last year, has told ABC radio nobody in the partyreally understands the strong division there is between the parliamentary wing and saythe national executive.

Senator NATASHA STOTT DESPOJA quit as leader yesterday, claiming cowardly attacks byher colleagues made it impossible for her to continue.

Mr WOODLEY says her departure is a shame and he would have preferred her to stay on,but she's shown her leadership is inadequate because she's been unable to carry on withthe reforms.

And he says the Democrats national executive has acted inappropriately, if not illegally.

He says a letter from the clerk of the Senate points out that action by the executiveto gag the parliamentarians during the leadership ballot 15 months ago was against Senateprivilege.

Mr WOODLEY says deputy leader ADEN RIDGEWAY is up to the top job but the party maynot let him do it.
