Fed: New strain of deadly bacteria threatening babies

Doctors in Melbourne say a new strain of deadly bacteria seems to be spreading faster than usual.

They say the serratia marcescens strain is affecting premature babies in three hospitals.

Two premature babies have died and another 28 infants have been isolated after being
found to be carrying the bacteria.

Dr ANDREW DALEY says more testing is being done but the bacteria appears to be a new strain.

Luckily, he says, it's not resistant to antibiotics.

Nineteen babies have been isolated at the Monash Medical Centre, six at the Royal Children's
Hospital and another three at the Royal Women's Hospital.
